We hope you find it fun and helpful - take a look through our pages to find out more about us.
Engan Karate Nansei is a not-for-profit group teaching karate in Weston-super-Mare. We currently run 3 clubs in the area, opening our doors for the first time at Oldmixon School in 1995. After a successful couple of years we spread our wings to encompass training at Uphill Village Hall and in 2011 Locking Village Hall was added to our list of clubs.
We teach karate for fitness, self-defence, sport and traditional karate values. Our open style of karate has an ideology in that, rather than practice any particular genre, we have adapted basics from some of the traditional schools into what we consider to be a more practical and body friendly style of techniques based on evasion and re-direction of the opponent's force making it suitable for all. This has continued into our kata where we have encompassed various styles into our syllabus to give a more flexible approach as we feel that an open mind gives freedom to perpetuate the true values of karate without restriction. Our instruction includes single step basic techniques, sparring, self-defence techniques and pre-set multiple attack defences in forms. General warm up, strengthening and stamina work are also part of the training schedule.
Regular competitions are available for students so inclined. We're very proud of our high standards and the success of our students past and present, some of whom have gained national and international titles. You can read about their successes on other pages of this site.
Not everyone wants to compete and some students don't even want to grade through the belts merely wishing to acquire knowledge and fitness. Everyone is welcome to come and train with us and to gain the things they want from training.
We are members of the English Karate Federation which is the only English governing body recognised by the World Karate Federation.
